creating

As we slug our way through the second heatwave of January we are finding quiet, early morning moments to pop outside. We play on the swings, in the sandpit and find little nooks and crannies where the penetrating sun hasn't reached yet. Then by ten o'clock we are retreating into the cool, dark of inside.

What do we do in there?

N has written up a list of things for the kids to do when they are bored - some ideas include trains (which have made a pleasant and very fervent comeback these holidays), playing octonauts, dress ups, puzzles, reading, swimming (in the wading pool on the deck) and craft.

There have been many craft projects here these holidays with both the big kids really getting into them. As mother/facilitator/cleaner of the craft I have come to accept the point of craft as simply being. It is the process, the journey. Not the end result. So I no longer feel put out once the craft is done and is put up on a shelf only to be tossed out in a week or two. It's all about those little fingers and minds creating something. There have been some winners which have stayed the course.

Here's a look at some things we've been doing while the thermometer hits 38 degrees outside - again!!

Aliens in UFOs

Learning to sit up on a big chair

Stables and barnyards

Giant box castles with moats, turrets and flags!!

On the days of reprieve we have headed into the garden to check on things. Here's what we've found.

Sweet as can be and oh so juicy tiny toms!

Giant rows of corn

Raspberries - a new addition to our garden and definitely worth an inspection

We lost the sunflower seeds so planted alyssum instead. Then I found the sunflower seeds. Sigh.

Yes it is hot and some days it might seem we are wilting but when I look at this I can see that we are creating also.

Happy January - for two more days!!
